45% of the inhabitants are Russian speaking Romanians descending from Russians that crossed the Dunabe in the past in order to build a new existence in the far richer Romania. The took their own religion with them and confess it according to the old rythe. They are called Lippovans. The major source of income was fisching, but since the lake was given in consessions the inhabitants are searching for other sources of existence.

Emerging is now the tourism, especially because Sarichioi has an open connection with the Danube Delta and at the other side of the lake with the Black Sea. Both the Dunabe Delta and Lacul Razim are part of the UNESCO list of World Heritage.

Fishing trips are organised to unique places in the Donau Delta, where you can stay on a small island with your tent and barbeque. You can stay there as long as you want. Regularly a boat will pass by to ask for your needs and take care of them.

The following villages make part of Sarichioi: Sarichioi, Sabangia, Zebil, Visterna en Enisala.

Sarichio has a surface of 28.238 ha.

At a distance of less than half an hour by boat you find a colony of pelicans.
